The Lost City, King Ash Bay

Beautiful grevilleas at the car park/lost city

We ordered a cooked breakfast at Lorella as a special treat and so we wouldn't have to unpack food for breakfast . All packed up and ready to go early and up to the 'restaurant' by 7.30am for breakfast (at their suggestion) though they had forgotten and had to start cooking quickly!

Showing Roper Bar, Lorella Springs and the Southern Lost City.

We hadn't expected to stay 5 nights. What a great place to get out and see the country. It was a warm night again, no sleeping blanket required. Heavy dew. 24C by 9am

We dumped our rubbish in the allotted spot and headed out to the lost city. A 'short' back track in the Savannah.

Leaving Lorella Springs

Leaving Limmen National Park. Back onto the Savannah Way.

We are currently 6157.8 km from home.

Lost City from the car park

Lost city, stunning. Right up there with the three big ones (Uluru/Kata Juta/Kings Canyon). It was a very hot walk, take lots of water. Saw a couple of mid size pretty brown birds. Thousands of small moths near ground level and in one spot a swarm of black and white butterflies.

Some of the amazing rock formations in the Lost City

We spent some hours walking around the Lost City which was just enthralling.

View from the Lost City

Somehow we skipped morning tea and lunch. Made it to Borroloola for fuel and supplies. A small outback indigenous town with not a lot of choices and high prices but pretty much got what we needed. Looks to be a service town for the locals. Fancy school.

On to Boroloola. Dusty narrow roads. Interesting with road trains!

We were only able to buy 6 mid strength beers at the local supermarket and no wine. Had to show drivers license for a scan and be breathalyzed. Take away in a brown paper bag.
We bumped into some familiar travelers in the car park-we had chatted with at Lorella springs and they told us about King Ash Bay that was on the river and had a caravan park with washing machines and amenities. Sounded a lot more attractive than Borolloola.

We met a short sharp shower of rain in the way and hoped it wasn't going to be a wet and muddy visit.

King Ash Bay

Nice spot for an evening happy hour

From Lorella Springs to King Ash Bay

King Ash Bay was about 20 km out of town. We tried to get a cabin but were warned that they were multi night stay and the proprietors were difficult to find so we went with the rooftop camper again.
Driving down to the river to find a spot was challenging as there were so many caravans and cars it looked like a car park and there were certainly no sites left on the water. We did find a nice spot anyway just not right on the river bank. Put the washing on and walked up to the local club for dinner after pitching the tent.
All good at the fishing club for happy hour at 5:30pm and dinner orders from 6pm.
Back at the camp we hung out the washing and reorganised the fridge to take all the new groceries and had to drink Orange juice slushy to make space- yum!
Our camp neighbour came to say g’day - an erstwhile Canberran who now lives on the Gold Coast.
We headed back to the club for happy hour and battered barra for my birthday dinner.

A lovely spot for dinner

What we saw today:

Pheasant coucal
Small eagle; both flew across road

A circling black kite just as we were leaving.

Galah

Horse brown
Willie wag tail
Flock little parrots cockatiel
Water buffalo
Raven
Magpie larks
Magpies
Pale grey hawk
Agile wallaby
Loads of native hibiscus by the road side

Long dirt road, dips, and water crossings. Spectacular countryside.
