Queensland: Hell's Gate to Adel's Grove

Fuel at Hell's Gate (just kidding, they did have the real thing too)
An early rise but a late start after mucking around with contacting unisuper before realising it was Saturday! Too carried away with being back on the internet to stop and see what day of the week it was!
We posted mums 2nd postcard at Hell’s gate as they were expecting the mail plane today.

A distant emu
Our intended and preferred road to Adel's Grove, just East of Doomadgee, was closed apart from local traffic so we had to divert and go a lot further to get there.
Hells Gate to Adel's Grove/Lawn Hill
We stopped at Tirrana Springs roadhouse just before the next turn off and topped up with diesel. A big frog in the toilet had to swim hard to stay in the bowl when flushed! Apparently the closed road wasn’t really closed and is ok for the return trip.
It was a rather longer trip than anticipated but the road was like a highway compared to others.
What we saw today:
- Dark egret
- Stout kites/eagle
- Sun shining today, 18c at 9am. Very windy.
- Tar road or at least bits.
- Magpies
- Corella
- Crow
- Huge flock of kites circling on a thermal
- Horses by the road at Doomadgee.
- Night heron
- White flowering shrub by side of road
- Native hibiscus
- Kangaroo/wallaby by road. Same type, pretty face.
- A bigger flock of kites, more than 100 birds high up in thermal
- Huge flock black and white ibis rose out of marshland sides of the road as we drove by.
- Bull and Brahman cows
- More ibis in a tree , large flock white bodies black wings.
- Big brown snake on road , hopefully missed it.
- Cockatiels big flock
- Pee wees
- Budgie
- Emu
- 2 wedge tailed eagles
- Horses

Gregory Downs was supposed to be a good free camping spot under the bridge but it was like a car park! Everyone had clearly heard about it! Boiled the billy for a cuppa and kept going!

Directions to Lawn Hill/Adels Grove
We rolled into Adel's Grove and parked where directed to book in. It was very frustrating waiting for other tourists to sort themselves out!
We booked in for two nights camping and booked a kayak for a paddle tomorrow at Lawn Hill Gorge. It was a lovely camping spot but we had some odd neighbours who pitched up a large encampment between us and the river -on the road!

Pano of the river where we camped
We went for a walk along the river, came back and boiled the Billy then set up the gas cooker for the first time this trip due to a shortage of firewood. Paddle booked for tomorrow.

Beautiful walk along the river
We walked up to the main area for a happy hour drink, and in the end found firewood so didn't need to use the gas after all!
