Karumba!

Red tailed black cockatoo staying out of easy reach

We were up nice and early,  in time to leave the donga at 8:20am for the birdwatching cruise at 9am. We drove into the town and walked down to the jetty on Gilbert St. No people or boat wasn't a good sign. After waiting around hopefully for some time we managed to call the organiser of the Ferryman tours and left messages which they finally returned. Apparently there was a mix up in days, a death in their family, no cruise today but we are booked in for tomorrow.

Map showing Karumba which is a bit off the Savannah Way but very worthy of a visit

As there was no bird cruise this morning, we went for a bit of a drive around the local wetlands and even the golf course, and found lots of birds but they were pretty shy and distant. On the way back to our accommodation we got a few good shots of brolgas that were standing right next to the road. Didn't even get out of the car for these guys!

Back to the den and did the washing and hung it up. So hot here it will dry in no time.

Brolgas by the side of the road

We booked a table for sunset dinner tomorrow night at the pub as tonight was already full! Then we walked down to the café (nearly expiring in the heat) and had some lunch and then back again to home in the heat for a cuppa and a swim in the pool.

Plan is to see the famous Barra Center this afternoon.

Artwork at the Barra Centre, made from recycled and recovered drift nets.

Dropped into the Barra Centre. An impressive building and investment. A big pond in the Centre was full of young Barramundi.

We picked up a magnetic mud crab as a souvenir and then returned for a bit of rest and catch up, organising our forward trip (didn't want to get caught out on accommodation again!) and blogging.

Whistling kites constantly circling as the sun set

We took chairs, wine and chips over the road to watch the sun set over the ocean again.

Enjoying the sunset with a nice cold vino

Yep it really is setting over the ocean

Beautiful

We were surprised today to learn that there are only 2 tides a day here, 1 high and 1 low due to the structure of the Gulf.
