Springsure Mountains
A pre-dawn start out of Emerald. The dawn light on the hills is beautiful. Just North side of Springsure mountains. They were lit up like fire in the morning light and we made a quick stop to take some pictures. There were plenty of others stopped there, in fact camping!

Lots of roadwork, and gorgeous cloudscapes
What we saw:
- Big grey kangaroo hopped across the road in early light.
- Passed the turn to Canarvon Gorge. Looks like it’s worth a future visit.
- Kites
- Flocks of pigeons
- Crops
- Cattle
- Kookaburra
- Pee wees
- Bumpy old roads but beautiful ranges all the way. Gorgeous cloudscape .
- Bottle tree
- Magpies
- Lots lots of interesting diversions to investigate in future , lakes and gorges.
- Cattle are no longer Brahman but reds.
- Great rock formations
We planned to stop at Thallon near Roma for a painted silo but it was a bit off track so skipped it this time.
Temp has dropped. Only 12C at 10:30am!
Roma, town of the bottle tree! Street trees, everywhere!
A very big bird. What was it? Turkey bustard? Size of a goose, partly white.
Cafe stop in Dirranbandi. The local bakery does a nice hot chocolate and lamington!
cafe stop.
First sighting of a masked lapwing.
Goats everywhere!
Crossed the border into NSW at 9921km journey from home.
Countryside has been lush all the way after all the rains. Late afternoon a couple of eastern greys hopped across the road.
Agriculture has shifted to sheep, Herefords and Angus .

Lightening Ridge
We arrived in Lightening Ridge just before 5pm and had a quick peak in an Opal shop before closing time. Checked in to Sonja’s guest house and went for a drive around town followed by dinner at the local bowling club. Seems to be the only place in town to eat!

Picturesque wrecks opposite the shop where we invested in an opal next day
