Saturday 3rd July
Forsayth to Undara Lava Tubes Qld.

We packed up our lovely camp and headed back through Forsayth to Cobbold Gorge.

Packing up camp

                                                            On the road again!

Headed for Cobbold Gorge

Detour down to Cobbold Gorge then out again

Fuel stop. Cotton bales on a road train.

Even though we knew they were booked out for accommodation and tours, we thought we’d go and have a look around Cobbold Gorge.

A pretty location and parking for day visitors but apart from a pretty lagoon and coffee shop not much to see from where you could access without a tour.

Availability for trips to the gorge was  much later in the day, too late for us to do and make it to Undara in time. Bush walks were locally available but not to the gorge. In the absence of any other way to access the gorge, we managed to get on to a 15’ helicopter flight to the Gorge which was terrific. The Gorge was largely too narrow to see in to, but we had a wonderful view of it from above and of the landscape that we wouldn't have seen otherwise.

Fabulous view of the scenery

The bridge across the Gorge, only accessible on the tour

The resort logo is taken from this shape of the gorge - looks like a steer's head

After the flight

After the flight we went back to the café by the lake and enjoyed watching the black cockies fly around and the flock of small green honey eaters in the tree next to us. Up to then we had pretty much only seen magpies and a few kites and pigeons.

milkshake at the cafe

Mix of tar and dirt road out to the gorge, still plenty of red dust. Still hot and increasingly humid. 26C at midday.

Trip meter so far; 8134km from home.

What we saw:

  • Wedgie
  • Big flock galahs, first large flock in weeks.
  • Einasleigh gorge .

Einasleigh Pub and unexpected gorge. Just a quick stop and look.
